Equipped with 13 ingredients in bowls, stove, and other cooking tools, Bayu, our activity staff, invited everybody passing the pool to join the cooking class. His cheerfulness had successfully invited 5 people to learn how to cook Mirage Nasi Goreng. Few minutes later, a chef came and greeted everybody before she started bewitching those 13 ingredients into 1 appetizing dish. It took about 10 minutes to cook this special Indonesian dish.

Every spoon of this Nasi Goreng echoed the taste of Indonesia. The sensation of sweet and salty taste tickled the taste bud. Nothing but addictive was the best word to describe this Nasi Goreng. After every guest had tasted the Nasi Goreng, Bayu invited them to cook the Mirage Nasi Goreng with their own creation.

This cooking class is set every Thursday at 2.30pm-3.30 pm next to Coconut Bar.

Meet Liza Karinata, our new Wedding Manager!

Bali Benoa  Grand Mirage Resort and Thalasso Bali proudly announces the appointment of the new Wedding Manager, Liza Karinata. Her career as a romantic dream granter started in the five star resort, Ayana. She served as a wedding coordinator for more than a year in this luxurious resort before she decided to develop her career in Karizza organizer. Liza had successfully impressed this organizer to recruit her as the Assistant of the Wedding and Event Manager in the end of 2011. During her tenure in Karizza, she was trusted to go all over Asia as Karizza’s representative.

Liza defines her job as a wonderful challenge “My job is about being a logic-thinker and a dreamer at the same time. I learn about the couples’ characteristics, use my logic on how to pamper them, and I use my dream to give a fairy tale touch to the matrimony.”

When being asked about the meaning of a wedding for her, Liza smiled “I understand a wedding as a sacred once-in-a-lifetime moment. It should leave a beautiful piece of memory in mind and a long lasting feeling in the heart. This is what is always in my mind when I am arranging a wedding for my clients.”

We first stayed at The Grand Mirage Resort in 1998. Now, 15 years later we call the Grand Mirage “our Bali home”, having stayed there approximately 12 times. We have formed the most wonderful friendships with Management and staff alike.

Our most recent stay in March 2013 was the most memorable; as we had organised a humanitarian effort from our home in Australia to bring an Occuloplastic Surgeon from Perth, Australia to perform specialized eye surgery on 13 patients in Bali, who otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to have this very specialized surgery.

All the surgery requirements and co-ordination of patients was arranged with the amazing and inspirational assistance of The John Fawcett Foundation in Sanur.

This Foundation has been operating in Bali for the past 21 years and has given the gift of sight to over 34,000 people in Bali and surrounding islands by performing Cataract and other surgery.

There are 8 mobile buses in the “Sight Restoration and Blindness Program”, which can screen up to 700 villagers per day in remote areas where there would be no access to hospitals for the poor. They also custom make Prosthetic eyes, repair hare lips and cleft palates, run school eye screening clinics, provide free glasses and medicine.

John Fawcett is a gentleman in his 80’s who is so passionate about helping the people of Bali, and still plays a very active role within the Foundation. He employs many local Doctors, Nurses and Ophthalmologists.

We were privileged to be welcomed into his home on several occasions during our trip and his warmth and generosity was palpable.

I have been a Nurse for 37 years and was fortunate to be present in the RS Ganesha Hospital in Celuk to observe some very rare surgery being done on a little 5 year old girl, who was born with a very rare congenital condition which affected both her eyes, and would ultimately make her go blind. She will require 4 lots of surgery over the next year. We have been friends with this local village family since our 1^st trip to Bali and have always been so heartened by the love and support of this hardworking, loving family. Last September we made a decision to raise some funds and attempt to assist this beautiful family in making their dream come true and prevent this little girl going blind, by giving her the gift of much needed Medical Treatment and Specialist Surgery.

In March we were able to achieve this dream and I will be returning to Bali to be present for her 2nd surgery on the 9^th April.

This has been made possible by the kindness and wonderful support of many people in Australia as well as Mr Juan A Sanchez (General Manager of The Grand Mirage Resort).

Mr Sanchez and his fantastic team have been there to support us financially and emotionally all the way through this life changing journey and we are forever grateful to not only them, but all the wonderful staff of the Grand Mirage Resort. We would officially like to thank Juan, Mr Ralf Luthe (Former GM), the Management Team, the Restaurant staff, the water activities staff, the housekeeping staff and everyone else who has shown us so much kindness and love. We are truly forever grateful.

A: 10 years ago, I had a regular guest in Bamboo kids club. This cute little kid was from Germany.  And today he still remembers me after all this time! I’m so happy to know that he is planning to visit Bali and see me again in the next 2 years.

Q: Where does your inspiration come from?

A: As the saying goes, children are the key to paradise. The innocence & honesty that lie in every child’s character are inspiring to me. They teach me how to be an outgoing and honest person.

Q: What do you do in your spare time?

A: I love practising with my handicraft skills: paper folding, face painting, and so on. I even spend time to visit local book stores to find me new handicraft books. With the skills that I’ve got, I want every child in Bamboo kids club to also learn how to make some crafts and have an unforgettable memory of their vacation.

Sea Turtles & Corals Preservation

Nowadays, sea turtles are endangered species and their endurance remains uncertain in the future.  Being concerned with their existence, the resort supports the local community through preservation of its surrounding ecosystem, and is delighted to work hand by hand with the Seawalker operator at the

resort to release baby turtles and plant corals deep below the ocean. These baby turtles belong to the category of ‘Olive Ridley’ – generally greenish in color on the skin and shell. The corals come from the ‘Acropora’ species that can grow around 6 – 10 cm in height.

Heading to the diving point takes around 10 minutes from the resort private beach. Once inside the ocean, you will come in contact with the pristine underwater world. Holding baby turtles deep below the ocean is an awe-inspiring experience. These little creatures seem to be impatient to be released. Once they are, they swim up to the surface directly. As for the

corals, the Seawalker operator has built a coral preservation on which adopted corals are planted and regularly checked by some ecologists to monitor their growth.

The gentleman, who holds a Bachelor Degree from Les Roches University in Switzerland and a Diploma in Revenue Management from Cornell University, loves to have “un tapeo” (finger food) and a glass of wine together with friends while listening to some Flamenco. Yuliani joined the Sales & Marketing team three years ago as a Sales Manager. During her leadership, Grand Mirage Resort has achieved a remarkable award like Best Seller 2011 Resort Category of PACTO Awards.
In this new position she has the duty to maximize potential revenue, occupancy and rates and also responsible for developing and maintaining Sales & Marketing objectives, plans, and programs according to Grand Mirage Resort’s mission statements.

Yuliani comes from a hospitality management background and has a broad range of experience across Sales & Marketing fields. She has a career up to 12 years in tourism industries such as Bounty Cruise, Planet Hollywood, Waterbom Bali, Kuta Paradiso, and Aston Bali Kuta Resort. She is keen to bring her well experience to add value to the property and to take Grand Mirage to the next Sales & Marketing level.

She is truly a charming and communicative person. Hard work and discipline are the main demand
